Maddie Strider school winner of cabbage plant growing contest

Third graders from 2016-2017 had the opportunity to participate in the Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program. The cabbage plants were provided to each third grader by the Bonnie Plant Company to spark interest in agriculture and help support the teaching of basic plant growth from the curriculum. It gives the hands-on experience of growing food and using what they have learned in class to help them sustain growth in their plant.

Maddie Strider was our school-wide winner. As our school's winner, Maddie's plant data and picture have been entered in the company contest. She will have the chance to win a $1,000 scholarship if her whopper of a cabbage is the winning entry, randomly drawn, as the North Carolina state winner! Maddie's cabbage weighed in at nine pounds and was thirty-six inches in circumference-all the way around it! That's a lot of cabbage to chew on!
